Last night was maybe the best night of the year to cover the pitching in the organization as OKC threw May, Baez, Robles, and Reed, Tulsa had Robertson and Miller going, and Great Lakes used 5 pitchers that all pitched well. The affiliates went 2-2 on the night and we’ve got all the highlights covered.
AAA OKC Dodgers
OKC pounded out 9 hits and used several pitchers with MLB experience to beat the Salt Lakes Bees, the AAA affiliates of the Los Angeles Angels.
Congratulations to Miguel Vargas for getting promoted to the Big Leagues and it didn’t take long for him to show how great he is as he doubled on his first at-bat with LA and went 2 for 4 on the night with 2 RBIs. It’s not surprising because he left OKC leading the team in doubles with 24. He also led OKC in average (.291), hits (109), and was 2nd in RBIs (72), walks (54), on-base % (.382), and 3rd in slugging % (.497) and OPS .879.
Dustin May got the start for OKC and went 4 innings, gave up 1 run struck out 6, and walked just 1. Here is every pitch of his 1st inning, and what you’ll see is 2-4 seam fastballs as high as 98.9, 6 sinkers as high as 97.6, a curveball at 86.1, and 3 cutters as high as 93.9.
Chris Taylor hit 2 home runs last night, the first came off the bat at 99.2 and traveled 426 very happy feet, and the 2nd came off the bat at 102.1 and traveled 418 very happy feet. Check it out for yourself!
Edwin Rios just hit a 100 mph double and is 4 for his last 9 with OKC.
Drew Avans extended his on-base streak to 40 games, and for the 2nd night in a row, he did it with a bunt base hit. His streak is the longest in 3 years in the PCL.
Here is every pitch of Pedro Baez’s clean inning for OKC. His 4 seam hit 89.8, his slider was 80.1 and his changeup was 83.7.
Here are all but the first 2 pitches of Hansel Robles’s scoreless outing in which he looked very good. Robles threw 2 4 seam fastballs that topped at 96.7, 6 sliders that topped at 90.4, and 3 change-ups that topped at 90.2. This outing was good, fans should be excited.
Jake Reed started his performance tonight with 5 sliders, threw a sinker, then threw 5 more sliders in a row. The slider hit 90.9, and the sinker hit 93.4. The Dodgers picked up Reed on July 13th off of waivers, he threw 3 times for LA and is now with OKC.
Justin Bruihl got the win for OKC to go 3-0 and has his ERA down to 1.86 with the club.
AA Tulsa Drillers
Tulsa gave up 6 runs in the 3rd inning and couldn’t recover and eventually lost 6-4 to the Northwest Arkansas Naturals, the AA affiliate of the Kansas City Royals.
Nick Robertson had another scoreless outing in the 1-inning opener role last night for Tulsa. Robertson has been on point in the last month, as in July he posted an ERA of just 2.84 and a WHIP of 1.11. He also has not allowed an Earned Run in his last 5, & 8 of his last 9!
Congratulations to Cole Percival for getting called up to AA Tulsa, and making a successful debut last night. He had his full arsenal on display, so check it out by clicking his picture or on his name. Percival went 1.2 scoreless, and hasn’t allowed an earned run in 6 of his last 8 outings. and had 14 K’s in July to just 4 walks!
6’8 Australian, Cameron Gibbens, posted his 3rd scoreless performance in a row for AA Tulsa as he went 1.2 innings and struck out 3.
Jordan Leasure threw another scoreless inning for AA Tulsa tonight and that marks his 8th in a row and 21st scoreless outing out of his last 22. That’s incredible!
LHP Jose Hernandez posted his 4th scoreless outing in a row going 1.1 and striking out 2 for AA Tulsa. Hernandez can bring the heat and has an ERA of 3.32 on the year with a WHIP of 1.22.
High A Great Lakes
The Loons scored early, and they scored often and pounded out 14 hits and 14 runs to beat Lake County, the High A affiliates of the Cleveland Guardians, 14-4.
Jorbit Vivas had 3 hits including his 8th home run, and also had 4 RBIs and 8 total bases in the Loon’s 14-4 win over Lake County. Vivas has 4 multi hits games in a row and is 9 for his last 19 with a homer, 7 RBIs, 4 runs scored, and 17 total bases.
Emmet Sheehan had explosive stuff again for Great Lakes striking out 8 in 5 innings & walking none. Sheehan had an ERA of 1.31 in July, a WHIP of just 1.02, & has a batting average against of just .180 on the year. Talented 22-year-old right-hander out of Boston College!
Jose Ramos hit his 15th home run of 2022 for the Loons and has hits in 4 of his last 5 games, and 8 out of 10.
Julian Smith also threw a scoreless inning tonight for Great Lakes which marks his 3rd out of his last 4 outings in which he has not given up a run.
Antonio Knowles threw up another 0 for the Loons in his 1 inning and has gone scoreless in 2 in a row. He had an ERA of just 2.35 in July, a WHIP of just 1.04, and struck out 16 last month, and walked just 2! Great work from the Key West native!
Big RHP, Aldry Acosta has still yet to give up an earned run since returning off the IL, and hasn’t given up an earned run in 5 outings in a row in total. He gave up none tonight in his 1 inning, and his ERA on the year is just 1.64 and his WHIP is just 1.36.
LHP out of Oral Roberts, Adam Scoggins, went scoreless again tonight in 1 inning and hasn’t allowed an earned run in his last 2 outings and 3 of his last 4.
Low A Rancho Cucamonga
Much like Tulsa, Rancho got in an early hole and could never dig out, and lost a 12-4 decision to Inland Empire, the single A affiliate of the Angels. Jake Vogel had 2 hits, as well as recently signed Chris Alleyne and Luis Rodriguez hit his 10 home run of 2022 in the 2nd inning. Recently acquired, Kyle Froemke, had a double as well for the Quakes to round out the offense.
The Quakes used 5 pitchers on the night, with Christian Suarez and Kelvin Bautista throwing up zeros in their 3 innings combined of work. But, the big news of the day came in the promotions of Damon Keith and Austin Gauthier to High A Great Lakes.
Keith was one of the most overdue promotions of the year, and he left Rancho having been the leader in almost every offensive category for the Quakes for quite a while!

Gauthier is one of my favorite hitters, and with the way he uses the big part of the field, he’ll fit right in with the Loons. Gauthier leaves the Quakes leading them in walks (88), & OBP (.461).
