Dodgers Daily 3-10-23 Rojas Rips, Martinez So Far, Vargas Being Vargas, Pepiot Adjustments and More

The Dodgers entered the 2023 Spring Training with more position battles than they have had in quite some time. Gone is Corey Seager, Trea Turner, Cody Bellinger, and many others, and in their place is a crop of rookies and signed veterans that are competing for spots on the 26-man roster.

Takeaways from Nick Robertson’s outing 1) His length gives him great extension & his effortless delivery gives his FB further deception 2) He has an edge this year & is showing out in ST 3) The “ride and run” on his 4-seam to righties is very good & so was his changeup! #dodgers

Click to watch Wash in action

Mark Washington used Jet Fuel to put out the Angels fire. Takeaways 1) His vert makes hitting his 4-seam @ top of the zone next to impossible. 2) When his change is landing, no one, at any level, is hitting him. 3) His confidence & swag is Tailor Made for high leverage. #dodgers

Click to Watch Bruihl in Action

Takeaways from Justin Bruihls’ outing on March 3rd. 1) Slider has depth and swept under righties’ bats 2) Cutter had great horizontal movement to handcuff righties. 3) 2 Seam at bottom of the zone is very good. This is without statcast data, so take that info at face value. #dodgers

Click to watch Outman in action

James Outman had 3 hits over last weekend including his 1st home run. Outman, at that point, was hitting .463 so far, with an OPS of 1.375 & that’s on the heels of hitting .462 with LA last year with an OPS Of 1.409. Oh & the basehit in the clip was off of an inside curveball. #dodgers

Click to watch Heyward in Action

If you click the picture on the left, you’ll see a video that shows how well #jasonheyward is tracking the ball. I have 0 inside info, but, it appears that his focus is left Center. His hands are plenty quick enough, and it will be interesting to see how he handles the inside part of the plate. #dodgers #DodgersST

Click to watch Yamamoto in action

#jordanyamamoto will be interesting to watch. He has such a big basket of pitches to choose from, 6 to be exact, it will be interesting the direction the Dodgers go with him. Low 90’s fastball, cutter, slider, change, sinker, curveball. #dodgers

Click to watch Jackson in Action

Andre Jackson has yet to allow a run in his 3 innings of work so far. He appears also to have replaced some fade in his changeup in favor of tumble. It should make that pitch easier to land, and when his changeup is landing, it’s gonna be a tough day for hitters. #dodgers

Click to Watch Pepiot in Action

Watch the “cutterish” shape of the Pepiot’s slider in the 2nd pitch to land it in the zone. Then watch how he shapes it later in the video as a strikeout pitch. That’s a fantastic adjustment he made in the off-season, to add to more tumble and less fade to his change. Pepiot got the start yesterday and went 3 innings, gave up no runs, and had 4 Ks and just 1 walk. That 1 walk was the 1st one he has surrendered in ST in 6.0 innings compared to 9 Ks. And, that 1 walk came to, of course, Ryan Noda, the former Dodger that was Rule 5’d!#dodgers

Click to Watch Leasure in Action

Remember the name Jordan Leasure! This dude is flat-good and has a big future ahead of him. From May 29th of last year to August 14th he gave up a grand total of 1 run. That stretch spanned 24 outings and in that time he struck out 35 hitters and walked just 6. Wow! #dodgers

Click to Watch Mann in Action

The Dodgers love long, lanky, athletic, talented, and versatile players that have a championship pedigree. Well, that pretty much describes Devin Mann who had 2 doubles today. He covers the outer part of the plate and up and in as well as any prospect in the org. #dodgers

Click to Watch Ward in Action

My man Wardo, Ryan Ward doin’ what he does gettin’ hits. Ward has one of the best combinations of average and power potential of any young hitter in the game. He’s hitting .429 so far with an OPS of .985. This dude can rake and he is “old school” tough! #dodgers

Click to Watch Cyr in Action

Tyler Cyr had his 4 Seam, Change & cutter on display today in his 1 inning of scoreless action. #tylercyr spent last year with Oakland and Philly and threw 13.1 innings at the MLB level and posted an ERA of just 2.70. His Avg. against was just .224, so he has good stuff. #dodgers

Click to Watch Syndergaard in Action

Noah Syndergaard hasn’t allowed a run in his 5 innings. His avg. against is .063 & he has 4 K’s & 0 walks. Hard to be for sure w/out statcast data, but slider had smaller “strike” shape, & also bigger “strikeout” shape. Commanded inner half to lefties & top of the zone. #dodgers

Click to Watch May in Action

Dustin May has the best raw stuff of anyone in the org. IMO, when combining velocity & movement with extension due to his length & the “whip” effect of his delivery. His ball explodes, it moves late away from barrels & can be overwhelming, even against elite hitters. #dodgers

Click to Watch Vargas in Action
We all know about the hit tool of rookie, Miguel Vargas, but if you want to see some good defense from him, click the picture on the left.  In terms of swinging the bat, he hit a double in his first at-bat and get used to seeing this! #miguelvargas hit 32 doubles in AAA last year which was tied for the 3rd most in the PCL. Vargas absolutely wears out the gaps from left center to right center, which puts the odds in his favor, because that’s the biggest part of the field. #dodgers.
Click to Watch Rojas in Action

#miguel rojas struggled last year offensively, but he is a career .260 hitter & hit .265 in 2021 & .304 in 2020. His career OPS of .672 is far from elite, but his on-base % is .314 for his career which is good. And, his bat-to-ball skills are something the Dodgers need. #dodgers

Click to Watch DeLuca in Action

Jonny DeLuca finished last year 55 for his last 189 with 11 HRs & 9 SBs. which shows his 20/20 potential. In June his OPS was .972, in July it was .958 & in August it was .996. He’s 3/7, OPS of 1.029 so far in ST, so his potential has quickly turned into production. #dodgers

Click to Watch Pages in Action

Andy Pages led the Dodgers Minor Leagues in HRs in 2021 w/31, his homerun per flyball rates have ranged from above average to elite, he hit .296/OPS .904 in the AFL at the end of last year, he’s shed 25 lbs., and has an absolute cannon. This dude is a great prospect. #dodgers

Click to watch Martinez in Action

JD Martinez got a hit in yesterday’s game but has struggled so far since becoming a Dodger. But, here’s some context as to why Dodgers fans shouldn’t be concerned. Martinez hit .167 in ST in 2014, then hit .315 for that year. In 2017 he hit .216 in ST, then hit .303 for the season. In 2019 he hit .200 in ST, then hit .304, and last year he hit .229 in ST before hitting .279 for the regular season. Some context on his slow start. #dodgers
