The Dodgers affiliates had a rough day, and lost at the top 3 levels. AAA OKC last 3-1 to Sacramento, Tulsa continued their struggling ways losing at home to Wichita 6-3 and the Great Lakes Loons have hit a rough patch as of late and lost last night 2-1.
“I Wish They All Could Be California” was a phrase that fit the action yesterday as both Single A Rancho Cucamonga & the LA Dodgers were the two teams that won their games.
LA Dodgers
Gavin Stone threw the exact same amount of 4 Seams as Sinkers & threw 1 more slider than change ups. 4 Seam was a Strike pitch (75%), 2 seam had late run that the Giants couldn’t barrel, both slider & change had 50% or better whiff rate. Great Outing! 6 IP 5 H 1 R 2Ks 3 BBs.
Mookie Betts has scored 37 runs in 44 games, has hits in 33 games, hit .500 in March, hit .340 in April, has 3 multi hit games in a row & is 6 for his last 13 with a double, a triple, an HR, an RBI & 4 runs scored. He’s been explosive but also has been very consistent as well.
Teoscar Hernandez has 11 RBIs this month in the 12 games he’s played in this month. He also has 5 Home Runs and also has hits in 8 of the games this month. He has been exactly what the Dodgers thought they were getting.
Will Smith is such a GREAT hitter! He’s hitting .315, OPS .861 and he has hits in 26 games. He had 2 hits last night which was his 11th multi hit game of the year and his RBI marked the 14th time he’s driven in a run in a game. He hit .455 in March, .337 in April before hitting a bit of a rough patch this month. So, last night was a good bounce back and a spring board to his next hot streak.Â
Do NOT hang a slider to Shohei Ohtani! Ohtani leads the league in OPS (1.103), SLG (.677) & hits at 60. He’s also 2nd in the MLB in Doubles (15), HRs (12) & is 3rd in the MLB in OBP. What an honor to get to see him play every night, simply incredible.
Gavin Lux finished April going 5 for 16 (313), he has hits in 9 of his last 12 games and is hitting .292 in those 11 games & has scored 8 runs in his last 13 games. He’s definitely showing signs of getting back on track & staying there.
AAA OKC Baseball Club
Dinelson Lamet continues to pitch GREAT! 5.1 IP 5 H 1 R 3 Ks 1 BB 93-95 on the 4S & landed at very impressive 66% rate. Featured slider the most, however, and it had 40 inches of vertical break, landed close to 50% & had a 55% whiff rate. Today was impressive, ERA down to 3.33.
Jason Heyward had 3 At Bats today for OKC! I hesitate to give results, because, although you’re always competitive in the moment, there’s way more at play in rehab appearances. Here’s video of his entire 3rd At Bat.
Miguel Vargas had an RBI double in his 1st AB today, then had a 104.3 MPH groundout, a lineout at 97.1 & a flyout at 95.7, so exit velos look good. His double today was his 23rd extra base hit & his 7th so far this month. Average up to .294, OPS 1.010.
Drew Avans had 2 hits this afternoon for AAA OKC, which is his 18th Multi hit game of the year. He moved his average to .331, OPS .899 & has scored 38 runs, which leads the PCL. This has been your Dodgers Daily reminder that he is One Helluva Player!
AA Tulsa Drillers
Good outing for Orlando Ortiz-Mayr. 5 IP 6 H 2 R 5 K 3 BB Great pitchability, always gives length & does a great job at creating weak contact & fast innings. That matters when you’re trying to keep momentum.
Diego Cartaya just went yard for the 2nd game in a row & is now 4 for his last 7. We’re just about 1/4 of the way through the season, still plenty of time to put up big numbers, he’s totally capable.
Great outing for Hobbsy! 2 IP 2 H 0 R 2 Ks 0 BB Breaking ball was sharp, as usual, Fastball dotted up well & Wichita didn’t really have much of a chance. Seriously, check out some of these breaking balls from Michael Hobbs!
Taylor Young had a hit, was on base 3 times, scored a run and made the Defensive Play of the Day. Young has been on base in all but 5 games this year.
Dalton Rushing had 2 hits including his 5th double of 2024. Rushing is hitting .271, OPS .876 & has hits in 6 of the 8 games this month he’s played in. Dude Can Mash & when he hits a ball, it stays hit,
High A Great Lakes
Peter Heubeck was a 2 out bloop hit away from 5 shutout innings, and was impressive, nonetheless. 5 IP 4 H 2 R 6 Ks 2 BB ERA on the year 3.27 34 Ks in 22 innings, so a ton of swing & miss & advanced understanding of sequencing. Also spikes his curveball, so has 12-6 bite.
Good outing for Lefty reliever Kelvin Bautista to add on this good start to 2024. 1 IP, 1 H then 0’s across the board. ERA down to 2.81, 6 of his last 7 have been scoreless.
Nobody fights over the Bat Rack when Edgardo Henriquez comes in the game. Henriquez is 2nd in the Cal League in SwStr& (Swinging Strike %) & 2nd only behind his teammate Jose Rodriquez. 18.29 K/9, 50% K%, average against of just .125. Dude is THE definition of explosive.
Single A Rancho Cucamonga
Patrick Copen turned in another GREAT outing for Rancho. 7 IP 3 H 0 R 4 Ks 1 BB ERA down to 2.93, 31 Ks on the year to just 13 BBs. 2nd start in a row he has not allowed a run (12 IP). 4S, 2S, Cutter, Slider Curve, change & so big & very explosive mix. Stay Tuned!
Robinson Ortiz has made a splash on his re entry & hasn’t allowed a run in his 3 outings that spans 5 IP. Believe it or not, he’s yet to strike anybody out, but the way his ball moves, he’s not getting hit. Big prospect back in ’21, did not pitch last 2 years due to injury.
Jeral Perez went yard for Rancho for his 5th HR of 2024. He also had 2 hits on the night, which is his 4th multi hit game this month & is hitting .312, OPS .981. Short, compact swing, lots of pop.
Kendall George had 3 hits & a stolen base last night for Rancho, and his 200 grade speed was on display all night. 1st hit was a perfect bunt base hit, he then went the other way & slapped one into LF, then beat out a ball hit to the 1st baseman. Dudes game is exciting to watch!
