Split Squad Victories: Dodgers Move to .500 in Spring Training Play

The Dodgers had a Split-Squad Sunday and won both games.

The Pitching

Justin Wrobleski had a good start against the As in the split-squad game that did not have a video feed. Faced 9 hitters, retired all 9 3IP 0R 0H 2K 0BB.

Ben Casparius had a scoreless outing as well and had a strikeout and no walks, followed by Sam Carlson who has been one of the most impressive players so far in Spring Training. Carlson threw 2 innings and finally gave up a run, and then Julian Fernadez followed that with a 1 innings scoreless performance. Tanner Kiest had a rough day giving up 3 runs in just 1/3 of an inning, then Kelvin Ramirez got the last 2 outs of the game.

The Hitting

David Bote continued his smoking hot Spring Training, banging 2 hits in 3 at-bats and knocking in 3 runs.

There is 1 roster spot left, and he’s making a very good case to be the one to get it.

Speaking of roster competition, James Outman had a good day with the bat, getting 2 hits, including an RBI triple. Outman is now 4 for his last 13, so hopefully, he’s relaxing and settling in.

Michael Conforto picked up his first hit over the weekend, and it was a sweet swing he put on the ball to bang the Center Field boards. He added today by getting another hit, so it looks like he might be rounding into form.

Alex Freeland and Kyle Nevin both had hits. Freeland speaks for himself with his prospect status, but Nevin is one that I think is quite a bit underrated. He has a world of power and should have good bat-to-ball skills, although that part of it is a work in progress, as it is for every hitter in the Minor Leagues.

Bubba Alleyne, the 2022 B1G Player of the Year, had his 1st hit in a game in ST, and Justin Dean continues to turn heads, pounding another hit today as well.

Check out the breaking ball for Tyler Glasnow! Wow! That pitch drops out of the sky and falls all the way to earth. Combine that with the high rider, elite extension, and very good velo, and that’s why his “stuff” is elite.

This was an outing that should make Dodgers fans very excited.

Click to watch Cruz in action

Nicolas Cruz threw a scoreless inning in his 1st outing of Spring Training. Cruz is a 20-year-old out of Venezuela who signed in 2022, played in the DSL in 2022 & 2023, and then made it stateside last year.

Helped pitch the Complex team to a championship, then got promoted to High A Great Lakes where he threw 5.1 Innings.

Fastball at the top was big (96) and had good carry; threw slider for a strike.

Always fun to see the young guys get their chance on the main field. Congrats, Nicolas, and welcome to the Big Time!

Click to watch Scott in action

Tanner Scott threw to 3 hitters, and it was Good Morning, Good Afternoon, Good Night. This team is so fun to watch! Literally, everyone who plays seemingly is “Must-See TV”.

Click to watch Ohtani in action

I think Shohei Ohtani could bat 1.000 if all he did was try for base hits up the middle. This hit looked way too easy. I mean, TV doesn’t do it justice, but hitting a ball ain’t as easy as it looks. Certainly not as easy as Ohtani makes it look.

Click to watch Neeck in action

Get to know Brandon Neeck! Well, hold on, he just had a 1 pitch outing, so that was fast.

Neeck was THE BEST pitcher in the Minor Leagues from July on last year after working to refine several parts of his overall game.

Creates crazy angles to hitt off of from where he delivers the ball, then capitalizes on that with the movement he creates.

Click to watch Linan in action

Sean Linan...Welcome to the Main Field! Linan got to Rancho in June when the team was in Fresno and looked strong.

His FB ranges from 90-94 T95. ++ Changeup and a slider that made some big strides this year.

He can really command the ball around the plate and uses his stuff well. Career 7% BB from DSL to A-. Just 20 years old from Columbia.

Click to watch Vetrano in action

When Joe Vetrano gets ahold of one, infielders need catcher gear. Dude can really put a charge behind a baseball, and he has the potential to have good bat-to-ball skills, too.

Look how quiet his movements were to the ball, but how explosive they were once he started his swing.

He has an advanced understanding of the strike zone, and he’s tough as hell. His dad was NYPD. ‘ ’nuff said!

Dude just needs an extended period of good health, and he will turn heads. Loud Tools!
