The Dodgers won another series over the weekend, despite a somewhat rough outing from Lance Lynn, and a full blown rough outing from Julio Urias. Gavin Stone was very good for 6 innings, and got stretched into a 7th inning of work before giving up a couple of homeruns.
No question though, Sunday was a major success for the Lake City native as he got his first MLB win of his career.
Can’t overstate the pride those close to Gavin Stone should have today. His journey dates back to Lake City, Riverside High, Buster Campbell, Allen Gumm & Nick Harlan at UCA & the village that all played their part. To all those folks, enjoy the ride, you’ve earned it!
The decision to send Stone back out for his 7th inning was a “big picture” move. Let’s be clear, Roberts should have pulled him, but has the luxury to manage to the “big picture” with the lead the Dodgers have. Also, he showed faith in Gavin, however, and players appreciate that.
Cool to hear Tim Neverett call an HR from Mookie Betts, back in Fenway Stadium, a place they both once called home. Betts has 35 HRs, which ties last years total for the most in his career. He’s hitting .571 in his last 7, .536 in his last 15 & .415 in his last 30.
James Outman hit HR #16 105.8 and 387 very happy feet & it ties him for the 9th most HRs of any rookie. He also has the 7th most RBIs (55) of all rookies, and the 4th most walks (50).
The Dodgers are 80-49, and 12 games ahead of the Arizona Diamondbacks, tonight’s opponent.
AAA OKC
The AAA OKC Dodgers have had a rough go of it as of late, and entered last night having lost 5 games in a row. Nick Frasso was making his first start at the AAA Level, Kolten Wong was making his 2nd start since being acquired and Oscar Mercado was playing his first game in a Dodger uniform since his release from the Padres.Â
OKC pounded out 17 hits and 14 runs to leave little doubt as to whether their losing streak would come to an end, and beat the Albuquerque Isotopes 14-0. OKC is 76-48 on the year.Â
Kolten Wong went 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs, was on base 4 times & is 4 for 8 since joining AAA OKC Saturday evening. Wong was released by the Mariners on August 3rd, picked up by the Dodgers on August 9th, sent to the Complex for 2 games, and is now with AAA OKC.
Oscar Mercado had 2 hits and 2 RBIs in his debut with AAA OKC. Mercado was released by the Padres on the 21st and picked up Saturday by the Dodgers.
Here’s a look at an at bat from Ryan Ward who 2 hits, including his 5th triple and 2 RBIs. Ward has 3 multi hit games in his last 5 and 2 in a row, plus a grand slam.
Jonny DeLuca had 2 hits and 2 RBIs. Tonight was his 3rd game back since coming off the IL, so gettin’ back in the groove & tonight was a good start. Here’s a full at bat of one of his hits.
Good look at Shelby Miller in his rehab outing for AAA OKC. 96.9 on FB, spin as high as 2496, slider 44 Vert, 60% in zone. He looked very good going scoreless in his 1 inning, 2 Ks.
Here’s a look at the day of Nick Frasso from heavy ball, to flat work, to long toss, to bullpen to game. He was electric last night touching 97, going 6 innings, no runs, 4 Ks, 1 walk 3 hits. Longest outing in terms of innings pitched. That was fun to watch!
AA Tulsa
The Drillers scored single runs in the 1st, 3rd and 4th innings, then hung a 5 spot in the 7th and cruised past the NW Arkansas Travlers 8-1 to move to 62-58.
Been sayin’ for a while that the results were soon to come for Ben Casparius as he refines his mix. He’s been throwing the ball very well, and yesterday it showed. 5 innings, 3 Ks, 3 hits, no runs. Well done Ben, keep up the great work!
Jake Pilarski looked good for AA Tulsa going scoreless and recording 2 Ks in his 3 outs. Pilarski just came off the IL on August 15th and is getting back into the swing of things.
Imanol Vargas had 3 hits for AA Tulsa, including double # 27. Vargas has 6 multi hit games this month & has an on base % of .321 this month.
Yusniel Diaz had 5 hits yesterday for AA Tulsa & 4 RBIs. Diaz has been smokin’ hot hitting .404 this month OPS 1.197.
High A Great Lakes
The Loons scored in 6 innings in a row, including a 3 spot in the 3rd and a 4 spot in the 4th en route to a 12-9 victory over the Lansing Lugnuts. Great Lakes moved their record to 79-52.Â
Michael Hobbs finished things up again today by recording strike outs for 2 of the 3 outs he recorded. Hobbs lowered his ERA to 3.00, avg. against to .191, has 57 Ks in 45 innings and has gone scoreless in 4 outings in a row & 7 out of 8.
Mitchell Tyranski went scoreless for Great Lakes to record this 4th hold of the the season. Tyranski lowered his ERA to 3.76, his avg. against to .217 and has gone scoreless in 6 of his last 7 outings.
Christian Suarez threw a scoreless inning, had 2 Ks, no hits. Suarez has 5 scoreless outings in a row, which spans 6.1 innings.
Lucas Wepf threw a scoreless inning for Great Lakes to drop his ERA to 3.04, WHIP to 1.13 and average against to just .206.
Another great outing for the Dodgers 2021 MiLB Pitcher of the Year, Hyun Il Choi, who went 4, gave up just 1, struck out 6, walked just 1, 2 hits. Choi got the win to move to 4-3 & has given up just 4 runs in his last 14 innings.
Alex Freeland had 2 hits for the Loons, 3 RBIs and was on base 3 times. Sunday was the 6th multi hit game of this month for Freeland, 19th of the year.
Taylor Young leads the Loons in hits (102), Stolen Bases (51), runs (69) & BBs (75). When he leads the game off with a base hit, he scores, his team seems to win almost every time. Anyone seen that before? You want this guy on YOUR team, and, he’s just gettin started.
Damon Keith had 2 hits, including double #20 & HR #10 for the Loons. 21st multi hit game of the season for Keith. Well done Damon, Finish Strong!
Have a day Dalton Rushing! Rushing had HRs in both games of the Great Lakes DH on Saturday, and also threw a runner out to keep Jerming Rosario at the minimum. Rushing has HRs in 3 games in a row & has 6 RBIs in his last 7 at bats. !
Single A Rancho Cucamonga
Rancho was very efficient scoring 5 runs on 6 hits, but lost to Lake Elsinore 6-5 to drop to 63-57 on the year.Â
The Dodgers #1 draft pick from this years draft, Kendall George, led the way offensively with 2 hits. George has 80 grade speed, a good hit tool and adequate arm strength, with, all in all, limitless potential.
Thayron Liranzo, Luis Rodriguez, Jose Izarra and Jordan Thompson each had hits. Liranzo hit his 22nd double of the season while Rodriguez hit his 4th home run.
Jonathan Edwards has been quite the roller coaster ride of ups and downs this year, and yesterday he got the start it was up. He went 2 innings scoreless and didn’t give up a hit.Â
Livan Reinoso, Kelvin Bautista, Noah Ruen, and Carlos Martinez all had scoreless outings, but it wasn’t enough, as the Loons dropped to 63-57.Â
