Ohtani Dominates – Dodgers Take Win 4-0

Dodgers Blank Giants Behind Dominant Shohei Ohtani Outing, Back-to-Back Homers

Los Angeles – The Los Angeles Dodgers responded Wednesday night, shutting out the San Francisco Giants 4-0 at UNIQLO Field at Dodger Stadium behind a brilliant start from Shohei Ohtani and a pair of momentum-shifting home runs from Santiago Espinal and Mookie Betts.

The Dodgers improved to 25-18 and are still in 2nd place in the NL West by a 1/2 game to the Padres, while the Giants dropped to 18-25 and fourth in the division. The Hapless Rockies bring up the rear again in the Division. First pitch came at 7:10 p.m. PDT, and the game lasted just 2 hours and 23 minutes.

The victory snapped the frustration from Tuesday night’s loss and showcased a formula the Dodgers have desperately needed recently: dominant pitching, timely power, and enough offensive execution to capitalize on scoring chances.

Ohtani Overpowers Giants Lineup

Ohtani delivered one of his sharpest pitching performances of the season, tossing seven shutout innings while allowing just four hits, walking two, and striking out eight on 105 pitches. He improved to 3-2 on the season while lowering his ERA to a Cy Young(ish) 0.82 through seven starts.

The Giants threatened early in the first inning after Heliot Ramos walked and Rafael Devers singled sharply to center, but Ohtani escaped the jam by striking out Bryce Eldridge swinging.

From there, Ohtani settled in and started to dominate.

He retired 13 of the next 15 hitters at one point and repeatedly overpowered San Francisco with his sweeper and elevated fastball combination. The Giants finished 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and struck out 10 times overall.

For the year, Ohtani now owns:

  • 44 innings pitched

  • 0.82 ERA

  • 50 strikeouts

  • 0.82 WHIP

  • .161 opponent batting average

“I felt really good with the fastball tonight and was able to get ahead early,” Ohtani said after the game. “Against a lineup like that, getting strike one changes everything.”

“The defense behind me made a lot of big plays too, especially late in the outing. That really helped keep momentum on our side.”

The bullpen finished the job cleanly.

Tanner Scott worked a scoreless eighth inning and lowered his ERA to 1.56, while Kyle Hurt closed the ninth with two strikeouts around a Rafael Devers double. Hurt’s ERA dropped to 0.82 on the season. Atta Baby Big Hurt!

Espinal Sparks Dodgers Early

The Dodgers broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third when Santiago Espinal launched his first homer in the last 2 years into left-center field off Giants starter Robbie Ray.

One batter later, Betts followed with a solo shot of his own to nearly the same spot, giving Los Angeles a 2-0 lead and energizing a crowd that had watched the offense struggle recently.

“I was just trying to stay short and get something in the air,” Espinal said. “To help us get going against the Giants felt huge.”

“Any time you can contribute in a rivalry game like this, it means a little more.”

Betts’ home run was his third of the season and continued what the Dodgers hope is the beginning of a turnaround after a difficult offensive stretch.

“I’ve been grinding,” Betts admitted. “It hasn’t been where I want it to be, but nights like this can help build confidence.”

“More than anything, we needed the win. Against those guys, every game matters.”

Though Betts is still hitting just .171 on the season with a .659 OPS, he’s just coming off the IL and has only had two rehab games to get back in the rhythm, so, as he’s stated, he needs a minute or two. The Dodgers are hopeful the swing looked more like the former MVP they expect moving forward.

Dodgers Add Insurance in Fourth

The Dodgers padded the lead in the fourth inning with a sequence of aggressive, situational offense.

Kyle Tucker doubled for the second time in the game before Teoscar Hernández lined an RBI single to right, pushing the advantage to 3-0.

After a passed ball moved Hernández into scoring position, Miguel Rojas singled him to third, and Alex Call added a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.

The Dodgers finished with nine hits and went 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position. While that number still reflects some lingering offensive inconsistency, the lineup showed more balance than it had in recent games. And getting into the double digits in terms of chances with runners in scoring position was a good thing to see. As the Dodgers start to play better offense overall, that number will improve.

Tucker continued his good stretch at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two doubles. Over his last 15 at-bats, Tucker is hitting .333 with a 1.124 OPS.

Teoscar Hernández also continued trending upward, finishing 2-for-4 with an RBI. Over his last 16 at-bats, Hernández is hitting .375 with a .912 OPS.

Freddie Freeman quietly reached base twice and stole his first base of the season. He’s now hitting .277 with a .784 OPS overall and batting .292 over his last 48 at-bats.

Defensive Highlights Preserve Shutout

The Dodgers’ defense backed Ohtani all night.

Andy Pages made one of the game’s biggest plays in the seventh inning when he turned a fly ball from Drew Gilbert into an inning-ending double play by throwing out Willy Adames at second base. Heads up play by Pages, no doubt, but I have NO IDEA what Adames was doing.

Manager Dave Roberts praised the club’s complete-game effort afterward.

“That’s the kind of baseball we know we’re capable of playing,” Roberts said. “Pitching, defense, timely hits — that’s Dodgers baseball.”

“Shohei set the tone immediately. When he’s commanding the baseball like that, everybody feeds off it.”

Offensive Trends Still Worth Watching

Even in victory, the Dodgers continue searching for sustained offensive consistency.

Before Wednesday’s breakout, the Dodgers had scored three runs or fewer in five games in a row. Several key hitters are still trying to rediscover rhythm:

  • Shohei Ohtani, who didn’t hit last night and won’t hit tonight, is hitting just .190 over his last 21 at-bats, despite the 2 hits on Tuesday night.

  • Andy Pages is hitting .150 over the last week after a scorching month-long stretch.

  • Will Smith is batting .176 over his last 17 at-bats.

However, the recent production from Tucker, Hernández, and Freeman has helped stabilize the lineup, while the return of power from Betts could become a major development if it continues.

Giants Waste Opportunities Against Ohtani

San Francisco managed six hits but never found a breakthrough.

Devers finished 2-for-4 with a double, while Luis Arraez went 2-for-3 with a walk. But the Giants repeatedly failed in key moments and struck out 10 times.

Ray took the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits over 4.2 innings. He fell to 3-5 and saw his ERA rise to 3.04.

Looking Ahead

The Dodgers will continue the series against the Giants on Thursday night at Dodger Stadium.

Los Angeles is expected to send Emmet Sheehan to the mound against San Francisco right-hander Logan Rouppe in the finale of the 4-game series with the Giants.

After Wednesday’s complete performance, the Dodgers will try to build momentum and continue climbing in a tightly packed division race.
