AAA OKC Comets

Click to watch Miller in action
Bobby Miller walked 3 of the 1st 4 hitters of the game last night for AAA OKC, gave up a single, 2 runs, and threw 35 pitches in the 1st inning.

But, Miller got up off the mat, battled his ass off, and bounced back going 3 up and 3 down in the 2nd on just 10 pitches

He gave up a leadoff triple in the 3rd on a ball that Wardo dove after and missed, but then got a lineout to Chris Okey at 1st on a great play, struck the next guy out, and got a ground out to go scoreless in that inning.

He started the 4th, got a fly out, a K, gave up a single, and at that point reached his pitch limit.

A couple of things to note:
Miller was placed on the IL for a couple of weeks starting on June 22, and he just got back on the 1st, so his pitch counts are limited at the moment.

So, he didn’t get pulled for any other reason than that he reached his pitch limit.

Secondly, the 1st inning was ugly, no sugar coating that. But, he bounced back and was good from there on out, and it was visible that he was happy with his bounce back.

As per his start
46 of his 79 pitches were 4-Seams, then he pretty much split time between his slider/cutter and curveball. He only threw 3 changeups and 3 sinkers. 4 Seam was only in zone 33%, but most of that came in the 1st inning.

Zach Penrod came in for Bobby Miller after Miller reached his pitch limit and had a great outing.

Penrod got the W, which is his first of the year with the organization. The Dodgers traded for him on June 20th, sending cash back to the Boston Red Sox, and yesterday was his third outing since coming over. Previously, he threw 1.2 scoreless on June 26th, and gave up a run in 2.1 innings in his 2nd outing on July 2nd, leading into Sunday.

Split time between his 4-seam and sinker, and he was 95-96, spin averaged OVER 2300 on the 4-seam. He was in zone with his sinker 67%, 50% with his 4 Seam, and 67% with his slider, so he was a very effective strike thrower.

He bridged the middle of the game with multiple innings, which is a very valuable role.

Logan Boyer

closed out yesterday’s game for AAA OKC and got his 1st save of 2025. Boyer is totally capable of closing games. OKC has just had a bunch of different leverage arms on their roster this year.

Boyer was 94-95 on his fastball, but the cutter, IMO, stole the show for him. Boyer was able to add and subtract both depth and speed, moving back between his cutter and slider based on the count. It wasn’t a perfect outing as he walked the leadoff hitter, then also threw a wild pitch, but once he dialed in, he made the pitches he needed. And he trusted his slider and cutter in ALL counts, which missed barrels.

Last night was his 4th scoreless outing in a row.

Click to watch Wardo Ball Out
Ryan Ward gets the DAYUM Award for Sunday!
Dude had 3 hits, including his 23rd HR of 2025, and had FOUR RBIs, both of which leads ALL of Minor League Baseball.

Oh…and he also made a great play to end the 2nd inning yesterday with his back up against the Right Field wall.

Plus, Wardo is hitting .301, and, as you’ll see with his home run, his 2-strike approach has been a game changer.

With 2 strikes, Ward spreads out, flattens his swing, and simplifies things, and it’s been a great adjustment. It’s allowed him to be very aggressive early in the count, because he knows he can throttle down with 2 when needed.

And, then, occasionally, like yesterday, he can also hit some home runs while executing his 2-strike approach, too.

This dude is beyond deserving of an opportunity somewhere, and by someone. I mean, seriously, what more can he do to earn his shot? #dodgers

Click to watch Senzel Homer
Nick Senzel had a nice night for AAA OKC with 3 hits, an RBI, and scored twice. It took Senzel a minute to get going once he joined the org., as he hit just .207 in May, but he’s really picked things up.

He hit .260 in June, and is hitting .435 so far in July, and has a 6-game hit streak.
Click to watch Freeland in Action
Alex Freeland had a couple of knocks for AAA OKC last night, including a base hit for much-needed insurance in the bottom of the 8th.

Freeland played 3rd base again last night as Noah Miller played shortstop, so that’s a situation to keep an eye on.

Alex was on the IL from June 24th to July 1st with a thumb issue, and is hitting just .222 since he’s returned, but is getting back in the groove.

AA Tulsa

Click to watch GLP
You can’t put into words the day the Griffin Lockwood Powell had yesterday for AA Tulsa.

First, it was very hot in Wichita, and he had to catch every pitch of a 15-13 game that lasted WELL over 3 hours.

He got hit by foul tips, he got nailed by a back swing of a hitter in the 8th, and he never so much as blinked.

In fact, he pounded out 3 hits, and to add to the exhaustion of the day, one of them was a triple, which was a lot of fun.

I’m tellin’ ya’ when that game was over, I don’t care how good of shape you’re in, GLP had to be totally spent.

More on GLP
He extended his on-base streak to 35 games, which is the longest in the Texas League this year, and 3rd longest overall in ALL of Minor League Baseball.

I was there to see every pitch, and he deserves a Standing Ovation and mad respect for what he did yesterday.

Click to watch Nevin in Action
Kyle Nevin had a really good day yesterday for AA Tulsa. Dude does what he does, hitting pull-side home runs on one at bat, then nailing one down the right field line in his next.

He also added in a sac fly that just kept carrying, and, until you see him in person, you don’t get the full scope of the way he impacts the ball. He had 5 RBIs on the day and is 3 for 5 so far in his 3 games with the Drillers.

Nevin is hitting .297 overall, OPS .901, and, if you’ve paid attention to Dodgers Daily much at all, it should come as no surprise as this dude keeps climbin’.

Click to watch McLain
Sean McLain had a really good day yesterday for the Drillers. He ended up with and home run and 2 hits, but he put together great at-bats ALL day, and should have had more to show for it than just the 2 hits.

Slow start offensively to the season, but McLain looks really good at the plate right now and is hitting .294 in the 6 games this month, and if he continues to have at-bats like he did yesterday, he’s gonna have a lot of success moving forward.

Click to watch Myers
Kole Myers can flat FLY!
Dude beat out an infield hit in his 2nd at bat, and was, very unofficially, right around 4.0 to 1st base. He had 2 hits on the day as he also had an oppo shot to left field, he walked once, so was on 3 times, and scored 3 runs as well.

Click to watch Rhodes
John Rhodes had 2 hits yesterday for AA Tulsa, including home run # 6 on the year, he had 2 RBIs and scored twice as well.

Rhodes has hit some bumps recently, but is swinging the bat well right now, hitting .316 so far in July, he has hits in 4 games in a row, 7 out of his last 8, and he’s 11 for his last 30 with 2 HRs, 2 doubles and 8 RBIs. #dodgers

He was diving at balls in center field, and he went 1st to 3rd on a ball only he could do that on, he was sliding into bases in every which way, so I’m sure he rested well last night.

Myers is hitting .293 since his promotion, has 2 multi-hit games in his last 4, and is hitting .333 so far this month.
